A Study on the Elderly Patients Hospitalized due to Fall Injuries

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide risk factors and results of fall injuries for the elderly patients hospitalized and to provide for basic data to develop fall injury assessment instruments and nursing intervention programs. The research was conducted as a retrospective survey using a questionnaire. Participants of the survey were 142 elderly patients hospitalized staying at a university hospital in Seoul. Collected data were analyzed through frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations using SPSS 12.0.
1. A total of 142 patients participated in this study. The average age of the subjects was 77.48 and the percentage of female patients was 83.8%. In addition, 53.6% of the participants were middle school graduates or below and 69.7% lived with their children.
2. The internal risk factors of fall in the subjects were visual disturbance 21.8%, gait disturbance 21.1%, the use of assist device 16.9%, urinary disorder 6.3%, and 98.6% of the subjects had clear consciousness on admission. Of the subjects, 69.7% were taking drug regularly, and chronic diseases observed in the subjects were hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, etc. As for the external risk factors of fall in the subjects, the most frequent season was spring 29.6%, the most frequent time was morning and afternoon 38.7% each, and the most frequent place was living room or bed room 36.6%, which was followed by street 22.5%. As for the type of fall, 59.9% fell down, 22.5% slid down, and 8.5% fell off from the bed or chair.
3. As for injuries caused by fall in the subject, fracture was most frequent 98.6%, and the most frequent region of injury was lower limb 81.7%, which was followed by spine 9.9% and upper limb 7.0%. Of the subjects, 83.1% had operation and 28.2% had rehabilitative treatment. The average stay in hospital was 20.8 days. The average medical expense caused by fall per person was 6,310,000 won and the average amount paid each patient was 2,670,000 won.
